Warrane Primary School - Term 2 - 9th May 2025

Hello to the Warrane Primary School community,

I would like to remind the school community that Eliza Jones and I are heading off to the USA next weekend for our Hardie Fellowship studies.

Our study is centered on developing a multi-tiered system of support for student well-being and engagement to improve student outcomes, including attendance. We are looking forward to learning from experts in this field, including study opportunities at Harvard and Berkeley Universities. We also have many exciting school visits planned, where we hope to learn about the successful implementation of whole school practices that we can then implement on our return. We will be back at school from the beginning of Term 3.

While we are away, Mrs. Frances Thorp will be Acting Principal and Mrs. Melissa Didham will be Acting Assistant Principal. Frances and Mel will be in the roles from the 19th of May until the end of Term 2.

The Mother’s Day stall on Wednesday, organised and run by the School Association, was a great success! Mother's Day is important because it provides a dedicated day to celebrate the profound impact mothers/carers have in our lives. Thank you to the SA team!!

Thank you to all the family members who were able to come in this week for conversations with your child’s teacher. When parents and teachers collaborate, students are more likely to succeed academically, emotionally, and socially.

Have a lovely weekend.

I acknowledge and pay respect to the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community as the traditional and original owners of lutruwita/trowunna (Tasmania) and as the enduring custodians of the lands, seas, air and waterways. I pay respect to Elders past and present.

In 5/6 Gearman, we have been enthusiastically engaging with our spelling program – ‘Word Origins’.

Among the many things we have come to explore and understand, concepts such as the structure and spelling of English words are determined by the language of origin. To spell a word, we use graphemes (letters) to represent each phoneme (speech sound) in the word. In English, we write (and read) words as a combination of meaningful parts (morphemes).

We have a daily routine of joining together in our learning circle and unpacking a specific word. We explore sound patterns and the position of a sound in a word, the rules around letter combinations, letter sequences, the use of certain letters, and the history of written English.

There is a lot to consider when it comes to spelling, and we are working together to learn all of the components and improve our skills. We also know the important link between reading and being a capable speller.

Our class went to the Marine Discovery Centre at Woodbridge.

It is a great place next to the water and it is full of different kinds of sea creatures.

We had an amazing time, many kids said it was the best excursion ever! They were excited and well-behaved.

In our classroom we have been learning about some of the sea life we saw.

We have done lots of artwork and some science information reports. We have made a big book about our day.

Thank you to Hayley, Courtney, Mrs G, and Mrs Jones who came with us for the day.

The Warrane Primary School Kinder to Year 6 Cross Country Carnival is scheduled for Monday 12th May. The Carnival will begin at around 9.10am and end at approximately 10.40am. Each event will take approximately 10-25 minutes depending on the length of the event.

All students are encouraged to participate, even if this means they walk parts of the course. All students who participate will earn points for their house.

Results for students in Grades 3-6 will be recorded, with some students selected to represent Warrane PS at the SPSSA Cross Country Carnival later in the term.

Students are encouraged to wear their house colours if they wish to do so, wear appropriate shoes and bring their drink bottles with them.

Families are welcome to come and support their child/ren at the start/finish line at the front of the school building. For times and order of events, please see the program that has been sent home this week.

Corrected 2025 Levies will be posted out soon. The cost of this year's levy is $135. This covers all stationery, excursions, and activities for the year and can be paid via BPay or EFTPOS.

Payment is not required until the invoice is received.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 6244 1747, via email at warrane.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au, or by coming in between 8:30 am and 3:15 pm.

The Student Assistance Scheme (STAS) provides assistance for eligible families by waiving the cost of school levies. All families holding a current Centrelink Health Care Card, Centrelink Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card are eligible for STAS.

Further information on STAS can be found on the Department of Education internet at: https://www.education.tas.gov.au/parents-carers/parent-fact-sheets/fees-levies/.

The online form can be found at: https://stasonlinesubmission.education.tas.gov.au/ .

Parents who currently receive STAS will not need to provide any additional information and will not need to reapply. You cannot apply online or add additional students in the online application form if you are already receiving STAS. If you wish to add a newly enrolled child to your existing STAS file, please email the details to stas@decyp.tas.gov.au.

Questions about STAS can be forwarded to the Department’s Financial Services Unit at stas@decyp.tas.gov.au or by calling 1800 827 055.

If your child has a medical condition, it is important that we have all relevant information. This includes 2025 Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication forms, Medical Action Plans and/or Student Medical Condition Plans before the start of the school year.

Authorisation for Administration of Student Medication forms need to be filled out for both prescription and non-prescription medications. You can find blank forms attached below or request them from the school office. Form A is for non-prescription medicine and can be filled in by a parent. Form B is for prescription medicine and needs a GP or pharmacist input. Students needing short-term medication like antibiotics or Panadol must submit these forms before staff can administer them.

All medical forms must be updated yearly and signed by the child’s healthcare provider. If the current forms are less than two years old, a letter from your GP can confirm their validity.

Ollie spent time in the kitchen with our students this week, turning the fresh produce from our Warrane Garden into delicious tomato and capsicum relish.

We welcome volunteers at Warrane Primary School. As you would know from the past, volunteers require a Working with Vulnerable People check to be able to come onsite to help with events and excursions.

Registration to work with vulnerable people (cbos.tas.gov.au)

There is now an additional requirement that all volunteers have completed the mandatory safeguarding training module. The certificate must be provided to our office staff before you are able to volunteer.

We have students who are allergic to nuts and eggs. As this allergic reaction can be life threatening, the school asks that these products are not brought to school in children’s lunch boxes or for class celebrations.

Items not to be brought to school include but are not limited to - all nut products, peanut butter, Nutella, peanut oil in margarines and all egg products.

It is important that all classes observe this nut and egg aware policy due to the danger of an allergic child coming into contact with residue left by other classes. The parents/carers and staff appreciate your co-operation in this serious matter.

A reminder that families are required to use the larger family carpark for school drop off and pick up.

The smaller carpark near the early years classes is for staff and service vehicles only. It does not have enough parking for families and the visibility of the surrounding area and access in and out during busy times creates an added safety risk to students.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this.
