Hello to the Warrane Primary Community,
This fortnight has been very busy! You will be happy to hear that the front office area of the school is almost complete and will hopefully be ready by the end of this week.
On Tuesday the 28th of May, EduMarking will be on the grounds laying the sensory pathway. I am sure you will see the amazing new additions as you walk through the car park gate.
On the 10th of May the school celebrated Walk to School Day, where students and families were encouraged to meet at the Green Belt Park in Warrane and walk as a group to school. The annual campaign encourages all primary school children, their parents, and carers to walk safely and regularly to school. The event seeks to promote walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around and teaches your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Thank you to all those that could make it.
Last week the Botanical Institute visited our Grade 5/6 classes, where they were split into groups and had opportunities to learn skill. Students engaged in clay work, gardening, cooking and more. Feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive.
Students from Grade 3/4 went on an excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre in Woodbridge. The Centre houses fully equipped teaching areas, an aquarium room, marine pond and touch tanks, and displays of marine life and human impacts. The Marine Discovery Centre gives students of all ages the opportunity to learn about, discover and care for the marine environment through diverse shore and sea-based programs. The Marine Discovery Centre’s educational programs are hands on and aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
On Tuesday this week students from Prep to Grade 6 participated in the Cross Country carnival. It was a little chilly, but the enthusiasm and excitement took over and all involved enjoyed the morning. It was fantastic to see families coming along to support their loved ones. Some students from Grade 3-6 will be selected to attend the Inter-Schools carnival later in the term, information will be provided.
Yesterday, the 22nd of May, was National Simultaneous Story Time. In 2024, the chosen book for reading simultaneously is Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an important campaign held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. The LiL (Launching into Learning) group and the Prep class caught a bus to the Rosny Library where they were lucky enough to hear the story read by Noela Foxcroft.
As the weather gets colder, students can bring an extra layer of clothing to wear to and from school and during outside play. School beanies will be available to purchase in 3 weeks from the front office for $15. School puffer jackets are $60.
Have a lovely remainder of your week,
Sarah Hoban
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF TRADITIONAL OWNERS
I acknowledge and pay respect to the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community as the traditional and original owners of lutruwita/trowunna (Tasmania) and as the enduring custodians of the lands, seas, air and waterways. I pay respect to Elders past and present.
By showing up to school every day, your child will have the best opportunity at a bright future. It gives them every chance to be around friends, learn new things, and find interests.
Good attendance habits can sometimes be hard to stick to. Keep trying to create a solid routine, to set your child up for success for the rest of the year.
If you’re looking for tips on how to create better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.

STUDENT FREE DAY & PUBLIC HOLIDAY
A reminder that Friday 7th June is a student free day and Monday 10th June is a public holiday.
FAMILY PROGRESS MEETINGS (PREP TO GRADE 6)
Family Progress Meetings (Parent-Teacher Meetings) for Prep to Grade 6 students will be held from Monday 1st July to Wednesday 3rd July.
Bookings will be made online through the link provided in the next newsletter and on the school Facebook page.
Family progress meetings provide opportunity for two-way conversation focusing on learning progress and effort. This will also include important sharing of students work samples.
Congratulations to the students who were presented with their certificate of merit last week at assembly.
They were very proud to be acknowledged for upholding our school values of Connection, Courage, Growth, Respect and Responsibility.

Earth and Space Sciences
In 5/6 Bowerman/Stanford, we are currently investigating about how the position of the Earth and the Sun impacts life on earth. We are also learning about the relationship between the sun and the planets of the solar system.
Last week, we had a class discussion and shared our initial thoughts regarding how day and night occur, as well as the different seasons. We are looking forward to building on our ideas and expanding our knowledge regarding the solar system.
Our Initial Thinking
“The moon chases the sun around the Earth, they are pretty slow” – T.
“The sun goes under the Earth and for other people it is night time” – H.
“The moon comes up and covers the sun and then it goes behind the clouds” – A.
“Plants wouldn’t be alive if the sun wasn’t here” – A.
“The clouds block the sun at night time” – A.
“I’m thinking in the North Pole or the South Pole it’s always daytime” – J.
“I think the Earth is rotating at such ridiculous speed but because the Earth is such a ridiculous object it is perceived as being really slow” – H.
“I think the Earth revolves around the sun and the moon revolves around the earth because of it’s gravitational pull” – C.
When students share their ideas they have opportunities to:
- Engage in critical thinking
- Develop self-confidence
- Enhance their verbal communication skills
- Further develop their reasoning and listening skills
- Learn to respectfully critique the ideas of others
- Have opportunities to learn from and educate others
- Build on the ideas and understandings of others
- Build social connections and social skills
Links to the Australian Curriculum:
Science
- Students can “model the relationship between the sun and planets of the solar system and explain how the relative positions of Earth and the sun relate to observed phenomena on Earth” (Year Six, Science, Australian Curriculum).
- Describe the movement of Earth and other planets relative to the sun and model how Earth’s tilt, rotation on its axis and revolution around the sun relate to cyclic observable phenomena, including variable day and night length (Year Six, Science - Earth and space sciences)
On Tuesday, Prep to Grade 6 students participated in the Cross Country carnival. Even though it was a very cold day, students showed great energy and enthusiasm as they ran the course. The event was well supported by Warrane Primary families, and it was great to see and hear the encouragement for the students. Well done to all students that participated. What a great effort!
On Tuesday 13th May the two grade 5/6 classes had people from the Botanical Institute do an incursion. There were 4 activities – a ceramic class, cooking, gardening, and it culminated with us all coming together to eat lunch. In the ceramics session we made a pot planter out of clay. We moulded it, and then decorated it with seeds and pieces of twig and rosemary. When it is fired in the kiln the plants will burn off and leave a pattern on our pots. The cooking groups took charge of either making and baking cornbread, chopping, and mixing the ingredients to make minestrone soup, and making pasta to add to the soup. In the garden we observed and collected seeds, did some sorting, found out about loofahs, and taste tested a variety of plants.
Some feedback from the 5/6 students included:
The clay work was great, we got to make something we could keep, plus we made some other things.
The cornbread was delicious.
The cutting veggies was fun, Mum doesn’t let me use a knife at home.
It was great making pasta; I didn’t know it was made from just flour and water.
Eating stuff in the garden was good, except the chilli was HOT.
Who knew we had so many different things in our garden.
Eating together was nice, we should do it more often.
The people from the Botanical Institute were friendly and they knew what they were doing. It was impressive having a real chef teach us.
I wonder if we will get to glaze or paint our pots.
I hope they come back, I’d really like to do some other creating and cooking.
NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
Our Preps and our LiL families had a wonderful visit to the Rosny Library yesterday for National Simultaneous Storytime! They listened to a reading of Bowerbird Blues and collected some blue items for their nest.

A reminder that parents must not park in the staff car park to pick up and drop off children.
The carpark at the front of the school is the designated parent/guardian carpark for dropping students off and picking them up.
The smaller carpark is strictly for staff parking and deliveries.
It is not safe for students to be walking through this carpark due to lack of visibility for delivery drivers and reversing cars.
We appreciate your cooperation.
Warrane Primary are pleased to advise that we have the opportunity for Anglicare’s Taz Kids program to run a Taz Kids Club in our school in Term 3.
Taz kids is a program that supports children (aged 7-17) and their families. It is designed for students who might sometimes struggle emotionally, feel depressed, anxious or experience any other mental health concerns or those who live with a parent or guardian experiencing similar feelings.
The group aims to help young people learn how to cope with difficulties in life and build stress tolerance. It assists in understanding and managing their feelings, and promotes resilience.
Taz Kids Club is aimed at Grades 1 – 6 and will run for seven weeks during school time for around 50 minutes, with each session filled with games and learning activities. The Program is free and confidential.
For more information or to express your interest for your child please contact the school office.
